February 6 ------ Ukraine recorded 495,090 deaths in 2024, which is almost three times more than the amount of people who were born in the country, according to data recently released by the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice. According to the department's data, there were 176,679 births reported in Ukraine in 2024. The birth rate dropped by 5.7 percent from 2023, while deaths also saw a small decline of 0.2 percent from the previous year.
The war in Ukraine started by Russian President Vladimir Putin will mark its third anniversary later this month. Both sides have sustained heavy casualties during the conflict, but accurate figures for those killed and injured are difficult to assess with neither Ukraine nor Russia openly sharing their losses.
The data on births and deaths from Ukraine's Justice Ministry only reflects what was recorded in regions currently controlled by Ukraine but not information from land seized by Russia's military forces. As a result, data for Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts is not complete, while there are not figures representing Ukrainian births and deaths in the occupied regions of Crimea and Luhansk Oblast.
According to the Ministry of Justice, there were 176,679 children born in Ukraine in 2024. Data for 2021, compiled just before Putin launched his invasion in early 2022, showed there 273,772 births for that year. The capital city of Kyiv saw the highest number of births in 2024 with 19,706, while Lviv Oblast had the second most with 15,642 and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast recorded 14,029. Kherson Oblast recorded the lowest number of children born with 434. The Kyiv Independent noted that Kherson Oblast is partially occupied by Putin's forces, and the parts of the oblast controlled by Ukraine is frequently targeted by Russian attacks. The region that saw the most deaths last year was Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 53, 268. Meanwhile, 35,528 deaths were recorded in Kyiv, and Kharkiv Oblast saw 34, 883 deaths.
The Justice Ministry also reported there were 150,201 marriage records documented in Ukraine last year. Kyiv was the site of the most marriages at 20,862, and the city also recorded the most registered divorce records at 4,407.
