UAAP, NCAA postpone October 23 basketball slate due to Tropical Storm Kristine

MANILA, Philippines, October 23 ------ In a no-brainer decision, both the UAAP and NCAA upheld student-athlete and fan safety over entertainment as they postponed their Wednesday, October 23 basketball game slates at the due to the looming threat of Tropical Storm Kristine.

Already battering storm hotbed Bicol Region, Kristine is expected to slam through Central and Northern Luzon, including Metro Manila, in the next 48 hours, per the latest Tuesday, October 22 forecast of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which has also raised a red rainfall warning in Quezon Province. As of posting, almost all Metro Manila local government units already suspended Wednesday classes, including all 20 UAAP and NCAA constituent universities.

The Mall of Asia Arena was supposed to hold four UAAP basketball games, two each from the junior high school and men’s divisions. Reeling Adamson was supposed to take on streaking Ateneo at 3:30 pm at the men’s collegiate level, while rested UP and UE were slated for a potential Final Four preview clash at 6 pm. Meanwhile, the FilOil EcoOil Centre was scheduled to have a blockbuster curtain-raiser at 11 am between top-ranked NCAA title contender College of St. Benilde and Final Four-seeking Lyceum, while middling EAC and struggling JRU were looking to improve their fortunes at 2:30 pm.

All games will now be rescheduled at later dates, most likely at the tail end of the leagues’ respective second rounds sometime in mid-November.
