October 11 ------ HEEDING calls for adjustment following late finishes which hounded the packed first round, the UAAP has modified its second round schedule for the Season 87 basketball tournaments. From six, the league will now play only five and at times four matches per game day.
The UAAP’s late starts have garnered negative feedback from the public, with a number of games ending past 10 p.m., meaning even later than PBA games. The six-match game days - with tip-offs at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. then 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, and 6:30 p.m - proved to be a challenging proposition for the league, which for years, had slated its main games for 2 and 4 p.m. on the regular. With the reduced schedule, the league is hopeful that the 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. tip-off times will be followed to a tee starting this weekend at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Adamson (3-4) and Far Eastern University (1-6) meet in the first game, while La Salle (6-1) and University of the East (5-2) collide in the second game this Saturday, as Sunday will see National University (2-5) face off against Ateneo (1-6) and the tiff between the University of the Philippines (6-1) and University of Santo Tomas (4-3).
This second round is set to conclude on Nov. 16. Only one junior high school game will be played in these quintuple-headers, which will start at 8 p.m., to be followed by two women’s games. In rare quadruple-header games, both of which will be played at Mall of Asia Arena on Oct. 16 and Oct. 23, there will be a pair of junior high school games at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., to be followed by the men’s games at 4 p.m, and 6 p.m. UST Quadricentennial Pavilion will also host games, with action heading to Espana on Oct. 19 and 23.
Separate tickets will be sold for the first three games and then the last two. The home of the Growling Tigers gets one more play date on Nov. 13, with tickets for the clash between the Red Warriors and Blue Eagles to be sold separately as well. Tickets for the rivalry game between La Salle and Ateneo on Oct. 26, Ateneo and UP on Oct. 30, and La Salle and UP on Nov. 10, as well as UST and Adamson on Nov. 16 will also be good for one game only. Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan will be hosting the Nov. 16 game day, as well as the succeeding play dates for the women’s and junior high school tournaments until Nov. 24.
