LOS ANGELES, CA, December 14 ------ The U.S. Department of State has introduced two new visa restriction policies aimed at promoting accountability for the wrongful, abusive, and unjust detention of individuals worldwide. In a statement, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken described this initiative as a significant step toward addressing the increasing trend of foreign governments unjustly detaining individuals.
Under these new policies, the United States may impose visa restrictions on individuals involved in detaining people under false pretenses for illegitimate purposes, providing discriminatory treatment based on the detainee's nationality, or violating the detainee's fundamental freedoms, among other concerns. Visa restrictions may also extend to the immediate family members of those engaged in such activities. Blinken emphasized that people should never be used as tools for negotiation or subjected to abusive or unjust detentions. Such actions violate the human rights and inherent dignity of detainees. The United States stands in solidarity with the victims of wrongful, abusive, or unjust detentions and their families.
Since the start of the Biden Administration, over 50 Americans who were victims of unjust detention have been released. "We remain committed to working with our global partners to advocate for the release of all individuals detained in wrongful, abusive, or unjust ways.” Blinken Added
