Typhoon Goring nears Luzon Strait

Metro Manila, August 29 ------ The northeastern portion of the Babuyan Islands is placed under Signal No. 3 as Typhoon Goring approaches the Luzon Strait, the state weather bureau said early Tuesday morning.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Signal No. 2 is still hoisted over Batanes, the rest of the Babuyan Islands, and Santa Ana and Gonzaga in Cagayan. Signal No. 1 is still up over northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan, eastern portion of Isabela, northern portion of Apayao, and northern portion of Ilocos Norte.

PAGASA said Goring may pass very close or make landfall in Batanes on Wednesday. It added that Signal No. 4 may be hoisted over extreme northern Luzon. "During this period, the typhoon is forecast to re-intensify and may peak at near-super typhoon strength by the time it passes very close or over Batanes although re-intensifying into a super typhoon is not ruled out," the weather bureau said.

The enhanced southwest monsoon may bring gusty conditions over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, northern portion of Abra, northern portion of Apayao, and northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan on Tuesday. Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern portion of Ilocos, northwestern portion of Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, northern portion of Ilocos Sur, northeastern portion of Cagayan, and the rest of Ilocos Norte will also experience gusty conditions on Wednesday.

Goring was last spotted 220 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 190 kph.
