MANILA, October 15 ------ Billiards fans are in for a treat as for the first time ever, Efren "Bata" Reyes and Team Asia will go up against Team Europe in the much-awaited inaugural Reyes Cup from October 15 to 18 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
Reyes, who serves as Team Asia's captain, will be teaming up with Filipino star Johann Chua and Taiwan's Ko Pin Yi. Chua recently won the Hanoi Cup on Sunday, while Pin Yi also reached the finals of the tourney. "Lahat sila magagaling," said "The Magician" of his group during a press conference on Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. "It's team Asia versus team Europe. You've been asking for it; we have delivered," said Matchroom CEO Emily Frazer. "This is going to be phenomenal -fast, exciting, dynamic, you can not miss it."
The Asian side will be going up against Team Europe which is composed of team captain Karl Boyes from England, and Mosconi Cup champions Jayson Shaw from the United Kingdom and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz from Spain. "The pressure's on," said Shaw. "When you step out there into the arena, [there's] so much pressure, but We will be ready by tomorrow."
On the other hand, Chua is banking on being led by his "Tatay Efren" in going up against their European counterparts. "Actually, to be able na mabuhay sa mundo na naabutan ko pa si Sir Efren, is isang bagay na hindi ko makakalimutan sa buong buhay ko," he said. "And to be able to be part of this event — huling hinga ko dito sa mundo, talagang ipagmamalaki ko sa pamilya ko."
There will be a total of 21 matches in the Reyes Cup, including singles and doubles. Each match will be a race to five, and the first team to reach 11 points will claim victory. Matchroom Multi Sport chief executive unveiled the new Reyes Cup trophy during Monday's presser, while predicting that the upcoming week of matches will be "incredible." "It's going to be special tomorrow night," she added.
