January 3 ------ Filipina tennis star Alex Eala barged into the Canberra International women's singles semifinals after defeating Taylah Preston of Australia. Despite falling short in the first set at 4-6, Eala bounced back to dominate the rest of the match 6-2, 6-1.
Eala is ranked 147 by the WTA, while Preston is ranked at 170. Eala is showing the fruit of her tough pre-season training by winning her fifth match in a row in Canberra coming from the qualies. The 19-year-old Pinay's opponent for the semis on January 4 has yet to be determined. Eala's next focus after Canberra is to qualify for the Australia Open which begins January 6.
