SJ Belangel hits 1,300 points for Daegu in KBL

MANILA, Philippines, January 2 ------ SJ Belangel hit another milestone in the Korean Basketball League (KBL), scoring 1,300 points in regular games before the year ended. Belangel scored his 1,300th point in the Daegu KOGAS Pegasus’ 76-73 win over the Sono Sky Gunners in a home game.

The Asian import guard finished with a stat line of 12 points, five assists, and three steals to become the 272nd player in the KBL to achieve the feat. A left knee injury spoiled his solid game. But three days later, he hardly showed any signs of struggle in their New Year’s countdown game despite losing to Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus, 88-81, at Dongcheon Gymnasium in Ulsan.

The longtime KBL import poured in 23 points but it wasn’t enough to beat Ulsan, which was helped by his fellow Filipino import Migs Oczon delivering eight points, three rebounds, and an assist. The former Ateneo star scored his 1,100th point last November against KCC Egis, becoming the 302nd player to achieve such a feat. Belangel, who started playing in the KBL in 2022, earned a two-year contract extension from the Pegasus with his stellar performance for the team.

Daegu, which is fourth with a 13-10 record, returns to action on January 4 against the Seoul Samsung Thunders.
