Signal 4 up in parts of northern Luzon as typhoon Marce churns closer




MANILA, November 7 ------ Typhoon Marce roared closer to northern Luzon on Thursday morning, prompting the state weather bureau to hoist wind signal 4 in northern mainland Cagayan, the Babuyan Islands, and northeastern Apayao. In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Marce was spotted 200 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour near the center and up to 190 kph gusts. 

  

Marce was forecast to make landfall over Babuyan Islands or northern mainland Cagayan on Thursday afternoon. It may cross or pass very close to the northern portions of Apayao and Ilocos Norte through early Friday.On Thursday, destructive winds around the typhoons eyewall and intense to torrential rains will batter Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte.Storm surge exceeding 3 meters was also forecast over the coastal areas of Cagayan Valley, Ilocos, and La Union.PAGASA raised signal 4 over the northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Gonzaga, Santa Ana, Santa Teresita, Lal-Lo, Buguey, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Gattaran, Ballesteros, Allacapan, Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira), the Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of Apayao (Santa Marcela). These areas should prepare for 118 to 184 kph winds, which could rip off roofs and topple some trees, the weather agency said. 

  

Signal 3 was hoisted over the southern portion of Batanes (Mahatao, Uyugan, Basco, Ivana, Sabtang), the rest of Cagayan, the rest of Apayao, Ilocos Norte, and the northern portion of Abra (Tineg), where winds could damage houses made of light materials. PAGASA also raised the following wind signals.

- The rest of Batanes, the northern and central portions of Isabela (San Pablo, Santa Maria, Divilacan, Tumauini, Maconacon, Cabagan, Santo Tomas, Quezon, Palanan, Ilagan City, Mallig, Delfin Albano, Quirino, San Mariano, Gamu, Roxas, Naguilian, Burgos, Reina Mercedes, Benito Soliven, Luna, Aurora, San Manuel, San Mateo, Alicia, Angadanan, City of Cauayan, Cabatuan) 

- The rest of Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, the northern portion of Ifugao (Alfonso Lista, Aguinaldo, Mayoyao, Banaue, Hungduan), the northern portion of Benguet (Bakun, Mankayan) 

- Ilocos Sur 

- Northern portion of La Union (Sudipen, Bangar, Balaoan, Luna, Santol) 

  

Signal 1 

- The rest of La Union 

- Pangasinan 

- Rest of Ifugao 

- Rest of Benguet 

- Rest of Isabela 

- Quirino 

- Nueva Vizcaya 

- Northern and central portions of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao, Maria Aurora, Baler) 

- Northern portion of Nueva Ecija (Carranglan) 

- Northern portion of Zambales (Santa Cruz, Candelaria) 

  

Moving west northwestward at 15 kph, the typhoon may be out of the Philippine area of responsibility by Friday evening, PAGASA said.
