MANILA, Philippines, April 10 ------ After spending most of his life as an actor, Enrique Gil admitted that venturing into film production has been taxing — but he’s serious about it. Enrique, via his production company Slingshot Studios (which produced “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital”), together with his business partner Ranvel Rufino, recently entered into a multi-film deal with MQuest Ventures, the content creation unit of MediaQuest Holdings.
“It’s really hard because I’ll be honest, my whole life I was an actor,” said Enrique in an interview after the contract-signing event. “But I think it’s part of growing up. For me, it’s my next step not only being an actor but also being a producer. “And I really love films. So to be able to put my own inputs through the years, almost two decades in the industry, there’s a side of me that I really wanted to see or explore and I think this was it. It’s actually very hard. That’s why it’s very important to get the right people.”
Enrique took a hiatus from showbiz for a couple of years and he used that break to foray into business. “And I really talked with my team and my partners in my company. They’re really my friends and when we talked about it, the only reason I want to come back is I want to leave something for the industry. So we thought of creating our own production company. At least I can contribute pa rin and leave something for the industry that I grew up in,” he stated.
The newly formed Slingshot Studios already did two film projects and they were offered to join forces with MVP Group and MQuest Ventures just recently. “It’s a huge, huge deal for my company so, of course. we really have to jump into it,” said Enrique. Slingshot Studios and MQuest Ventures are set to co-produce major films and they are set to begin production soon for Enrique’s first film under the multi-picture deal. “MediaQuest is such a huge (company). So we were talking with Jane (Jimenez-Basas of MQuest Ventures), the president, they wanna go big. So alright that’s super exciting for us. Now we can really just go big with our concepts and maraming concepts. Most of the concepts, I really love them and like them so at this point, sky’s the limit for what we can pitch and produce. Hopefully everything works out,” enthused Enrique.
The contract-signing event was attended by MVP Group and MediaQuest chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, MediaQuest and MQuest Ventures president and chief executive officer Jane, MediaQuest Group chief finance officer John Andal and Ranvel. “This partnership with Enrique Gil is a testament to our commitment to bringing quality entertainment to the Filipino audience,” remarked Jane. “Enrique Gil is one of the finest talents of his generation, and we are thrilled to be part of his journey as he takes on exciting new projects that will push creative boundaries and resonate deeply with audiences.”
Is Enrique also interested in film directing? “Not yet, masyadong marami pa,” he told The STAR. “But who knows in the future? I never close my doors to anything.” He further expressed that he wants to go back to the romcom genre since it’s his “core.” “But we wanna put a twist to it. I think it’s also time to get back into my groove but, of course, we’re doing something different para hindi lang siya the same. May twist, change.” Asked if he and Nadine Lustre are going to team up for a film project, he said, “I’m not sure about that… I am open to work with anybody, so (whether) it’s Nadine (or) if it’s somebody else, I just wanna work. I’m super excited.”
