Scottie posts triple double in Ginebra's vengeful win over Blackwater

September 11 ------ BARANGAY Ginebra got its revenge over Blackwater behind a collective effort, 112-98, in the PBA 49th Season Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. With a triple double of 21 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, Scottie Thompson stood out among five double-digit scorers that enabled the Kings' to end the Bossing’s three-game winning streak.

Justin Brownlee had 20 points and nine rebounds, while RJ Abarrientos added 15 points for Ginebra, which has now won three straight games since a stunning 95-88 defeat to Blackwater last August 30. Stephen Holt had 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while Japeth Aguilar had 14 points in a game where the Kings led by as many as 19 points, 105-86. As good as it was on offense, Ginebra did its best work on defense by limiting the prolific George King to 21 points - his lowest output in his four games with Blackwater.

Sedrick Barefield, who hit a key four-pointer in Blackwater's first-round win over Ginebra, added 15 points but shot 5-of-13 from the field. “We talked about an attitude change. We needed to come out with a little bit more of a higher level of intensity because they’ve (Blackwater) proven to be a really, really strong team,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

The change in attitude manifested immediately as Ginebra started the game with a 36-22 lead at the end of the first with Brownlee making 11 points right off the bat. The final score didn’t reflect the competitiveness of the match. Blackwater trailed by only two, 78-76, in the third quarter before Ginebra ended the period on a 13-6 blast that began with a Thompson three, 91-82. Troy Rosario tallied 18 points and seven rebounds for Blackwater, while Christian David added 13 points for Blackwater, which misfired on 1-of-9 shooting from threes.

The scores:

Barangay Ginebra 112 – Thompson 21, Brownlee 20, Abarrientos 15, Holt 14, J. Aguilar 14, Ahanmisi 8, Go 7, Tenorio 6, Mariano 4, Pinto 3, R. Aguilar 0.
