Rhian Ramos: From ‘Probinsyana’ to business owner

March 11 ------ There’s no doubt about it, Rhian Ramos is one of the most successful showbiz personalities in the country today and one of the best actresses of her generation. While she is known first as an actress, Rhian is also a commercial model, singer, host, race car driver, and a social media influencer.  Of late, she added another feather to her cap as an entrepreneur — as baker/business owner of Bas Cakes. Rhian’s success on her cookie business comes as deja vu of her ‘Probinsyana’ role. It seems that the movie has become true for Rhian — as an entrepreneur. Congratulations, Rhian and more power to your showbiz career and business venture!

Her venture into the business world demonstrates Rhian’s ambition beyond the entertainment industry and highlights a desire to diversify her roles and responsibilities. And this would surely add another dimension to her already impressive career. Moreover, this illustrates a strategic approach to building Rhian’s brand and future, leveraging her popularity and influence to explore new opportunities beyond acting.

This writer had the opportunity to work with Rhian in her first solo-starrer for a full-length movie last year through an advocacy film “When the World Met Probinsyana.” Our small  group of Manila and Iloilo-based media friends were charged to promote the movie in Iloilo, Bacolod, and Cebu. This project made Rhian the first actress to have grand premiere nights simultaneously for two days in the provincial cities. Rhian, with her charm, eloquence and friendly countenance, was warmly welcomed in the provinces.

With a lone companion to accompany her, Rhian traveled to Bacolod for a morning premiere showing activity and took the Ro-Ro to Iloilo at lunchtime for the late afternoon meet and greet. Immediately after, Rhian boarded the plane to Cebu for another red carpet event the following day. Despite the hectic schedule and lack of rest and sleep, Rhian maintained her composure and radiant self throughout the campaign in the three cities. Surely, she made a lot of the provincial folks happy.

For the first time in a Philippine movie, Seda Atria Hotel Iloilo and Park Inn Hotel by Radisson Bacolod gave the biggest support by sponsoring Rhian and the movie’s team of director and production crew who joined the promotional events. The movie, under the directorial helm of Director JP Ninalga and screenwriter Logie Ninalga, did not make a killing in the box office. However it cemented Rhian’s status as a leading lady who has fully expressed a wide range of emotion in the inspirational movie based on the true story of Teletech CEO Marge Aviso. Rhian excellently played a promdi or  a provincial lass who worked her way to overcoming challenges and eventually becoming a successful CEO of her own BPO company.

Rhian’s gain is another actress’ ‘loss’

Indeed, Rhian had a successful ‘baptism of fire’ in the business world through her guesting and exposure at the recently concluded Bakery Fair. Unfortunately, her win could be a loss for a veteran actress who was also invited to the event but did not come.

After all, the fair could open a host of opportunities for Rhian and her startup business. Backing her is a premier group of Filipino-Chinese bakers and bakeries in the country. Her presence could also command exposure abroad courtesy of international brands and delegates who were present at the event. Or perhaps the actress chef doesn’t need the Fil-Chi event anymore because she has already shared the culinary stage with an internationally-renowned gastronomy figure?

Incidentally, the same actress was considered for the “Probinsyana” role. With her Filipino look and being well-versed in the vernacular, this veteran actress seems to be perfect for the role. However, she or anyone from her team, never gave a yes or a no for an answer when the script was presented to her. In fact, she never hinted at any sign of interest to star in the movie, leaving the producers desperately having to play the waiting game. Despite follow ups with nearest contacts, there was no answer from the actress for a couple of months.

In contrast, Rhian readily gave her yes to the role upon reading the script when it was handed to her. Immediately, she asked her handler to reschedule her events and activities to give way for the shooting of “Probinsyana.” According to Direk JP, Rhian was deep in the taping as Margaret Royales for GMA 7’s “Royal Blood,” when she got hold of the script. And the rest, as they say, is history. Meanwhile, the diva of an actress who kept the “Probinsyana” team waiting is said to be really good in the waiting game department. According to showbiz insiders, she really has that attitude of keeping others not just waiting, but guessing as well, whether she accepts or not a certain project or movie. No wonder, her projects nowadays have become scarce and she’s rarely seen on TV except for some commercials and endorsements.
