Rain or Shine rides 37-point 4th quarter to slay San Miguel; HK Eastern drops lowly Blackwater

MANILA, Philippines, December 11 ------ Rain or Shine showed its high potential in the early goings of the 2024 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, taking down San Miguel in a late pullaway, 107-93, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre. With the win, highlighted by a huge 37-21 fourth quarter from a 72-70 deficit at the end of the third period, the Elasto Painters broke a 1-1 record tie with their mighty foes, rising to 2-1 off their second straight win as the Beermen slid to a 1-2 card.

Import Deon Thompson led six Rain or Shine players in double-digit scoring with a full line of 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals in just 31 minutes as Adrian Nocum led the locals’ cast with 15 points, 5 dimes, 4 boards, and 4 swipes. Fil-Am veteran Caelan Tiongson had one of his better scoring nights so far with the Elasto Painters with 14 points, as young guns Felix Pangilinan-Lemetti and Keith Datu each scored 12.

Eight-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo led all scorers in the sorry loss with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while newly-acquired gunner Juami Tiongson chipped in 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 3-of-5 from three. Import Quincy Miller-Scott tallied a 12-point, 10-board double-double — disappointing for PBA imports’ lofty standards — as star guard CJ Perez also quieted down with just 9 points on a cold 4-of-14 clip. Meanwhile, guest team Hong Kong Eastern bounced back from a 99-81 blowout loss to Rain or Shine with a low-scoring conquest of the Blackwater Bossing, 84-75, to clinch a 4-1 record.

Chris McLaughlin exploded with a monster double-double of 32 points and 23 rebounds in just his first game as a replacement import. Veteran locals Glen Yang and Kobey Lam added 14 and 10 points, respectively, with the latter churning out 11 boards for his own double-double outing. Star import George King led the losing cause with 41 big points on efficient clips of 13-of-24 from the field and 4-of-6 from four-point range to go with 12 rebounds in 43 minutes. No other Blackwater player scored in double figures in a game that featured a measly 9-point third quarter effort as the Bossing slipped to a 0-3 slate.
