MANILA, August 21 ------ Akari has swept the preliminary round of 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference. This, as the Chargers conquered Farm Fresh in straight sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19, also clinching the top seed at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. Only Cignal and Creamline have previously accomplished the feat of finishing spotless after the elimination round since the league turned professional.
The HD Spikers were 4-0 during the 2022 Open Conference prelims, while Creamline did this three times—2022 Open, 2023 Invitational, and 2023 Second All-Filipino. Akari had a balanced scoring from their prolific import Oly Okaro and local star players Grethcel Soltones and Ivy Lacsina in the Farm Fresh triumph.
Okaro put up 18 points on 16 attacks and two blocks, while the "Lady Beast" Soltones chipped in 15 points, and Lacsina tallied 14 markers. Despite keeping a pristine record, Soltones warned her teammates from being complacent. "‘Yun nga, sabi ko sa kanila ‘wag maging complacent hanggang wala pa kaming nahahawakan na dapat hawakan," Soltones said. "So ayun, nire-remind ko lang ‘yung teammates ko everyday na we have to strive every training and we do everything in every training," she went on.
Team captain Mich Cobb orchestrated the Akari offense tonight and listed a total of 17 excellent sets when the dust settled. They won big in the spiking department, with the Chargers notching 52 points in contrast to the Foxies' 36. The Shota Sato-coached squad are still could still enter the playoffs—only if Choco Mucho loses its match against PLDT on Thursday. Yeny Murillo paced the losing side with 14 points, while rookie Maicah Larroza added 10.
