QUEZON CITY, December 27 ------ Prices of round fruits are expected to see an uptick as Filipinos begin preparing for the Media Noche or New Year's Eve feast, retailers said. Fruit vendors in Cubao, Quezon City said they are anticipating the influx of customers because of the traditional belief that 13 round fruits will bring good luck.
Fruit vendors say Filipinos need not spend a lot to complete the 13 fruits. "Uso naman ngayon ang isang piraso per prutas lang, meron naman mga gumagawa noon," said Teresa de Vera, a fruit retailer. Grapes, for example, are expected to cost P50/kilo higher by next week.
As of now, watermelons cost P70/kilo, melons at P100/kilo, grapes - P280-300/kilo, apples and oranges are 3 pieces for P100, while a pack of Longgan or Kiatkiat costs P100. Some fruit prices are expected to remain stable until the New Year.
