PMNT opens third round of Asian Cup qualis with rout of Maldives




March 26 ------ THE Philippines started the third and final round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, beating Maldives, 4-1, at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac. Randy Schneider opened his PMNT debut with a goal in the 77th minute that served as the dagger for the home side after conceding a goal against Maldives, 15 minutes prior.

 

The Philippines got an early goal on a header by Jefferson Tabinas in the sixth minute, with Bjorn Kristensen doubling the advantage with a strike inside the box in the 19th. Sandro Reyes’ straightway blast in the 92nd minute padded the lead in an auspicious victory by the Philippines during the first home match of the squad at New Clark City.

 

Maldives threatened as Ali Fasir got the away team on the scoreboard with a goal in the 60th, before Schneider, who plays for Switzerland club FC Winerthur, got the Philippines back in control. The Philippines’ next match will be against Tajikistan on June 10 at home on a venue to be determined.
