MANILA, February 13 ------ The Philippine flag will once again fly at an International Tennis Federation (ITF) competition. This, as the country's national under-14 boys and girls' teams will compete in the ITF Junior World Team Tennis Championships in Sri Lanka from February 12-17. They will first take part in the pre-qualifying event in Colombo -- the first ITF event that the Philippines will participate in since the reinstatement of the Philippine Tennis Association by the ITF last month.
Over 25 countries are participating in the pre-qualifying event, which gets underway on Monday. The Philippine boys' team is in Group G with seventh seed Iraq and Myanmar, while the girls' team is in a group with fourth seed Maldives, sixth seed Oman, and Myanmar. The top team in each group in the boys' division will advance to the knockout quarterfinals, while the top two in each girls' group will move on to the quarters. Bicol's Maristella Torrecampo, 11, is leading the charge for the girls while Lucas Go is the ace of the boys' team. They are coached by Roland Kraut and Bambi Zoleta.
