
MANILA, February 27 ------ The Philippine 14 & Under Junior Boys' Tennis Team secured a thrilling victory against Malaysia in their second group-stage match of the Boys' World Junior Tennis Competition in Bahrain.
Led by Coach John Rey Moreno, the team consists of Mikael Andreas Honrado, Anthony Bjorn Castigador, and Krelz Jan Gecosala. Coach Moreno expressed immense pride in his team's hard-fought victory over a formidable Malaysian squad. "Our team fought all their hearts out with lots of passion. It's really a goosebump-[inducing] game. The Malaysian team are all ranked players," he said.
The match began with Malaysia taking an early lead in the first singles. Honrado faced Gareth Lim but fell short, with Malaysia securing a 6-1, 6-4 victory. The Philippines bounced back in the second singles match as Castigador delivered a strong performance, defeating Jacob Yong Tsern Wong 6-3, 6-2 to level the tie at 1-1. The deciding doubles match proved to be an intense battle.
The young Filipino duo of Gecosala and Castigador overcame Malaysia's Lim and Wong in a nail-biting encounter, ultimately clinching the victory with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-7 scoreline. This win marks the Philippine team's second consecutive group-stage triumph, following their dominant 3-0 victory over the Maldives in the previous round.
