February 5 ------ PETRO Gazz took its sixth straight win in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference after escaping a pesky ZUS Coffee side, 25-20, 24-26, 28-26, 25-22 at the Philsports Arena. The Angels’ one-two MVP punch in Brooke Van Sickle and Myla Pablo made amends in an extended third set after losing a second-set tug-of-war to seize control of the match and keep hold of second place at 7-1. Van Sickle had 27 points, 15 digs and five receptions as Pablo also had a conference-best 22-point night.
It has now been three months since Petro Gazz last lost a PVL match, all the way back to its straight-sets defeat in their second match of the conference last November to defending champion Creamline in Antipolo. They now have the league's second-longest active win streak at six with four preliminary round matches left. Kate Santiago's best game in a Thunderbelles uniform with a 21-point, 10-dig double-double, backed by Chai Troncoso's 19-piece, all went for naught.
Losing to their longtime title rival Creamline sparked a new fire from within a Petro Gazz side once tipped to be the bridesmaids yet again. Since then, Pablo bared how the Angels went on survival mode in every match that followed which has since produced a six-game unbeaten run. It's a defeat that they'll carry deep into the conference in a bid for a third PVL championship. "Nag-start naman ito sa Creamline na we lost straight sets talaga so sabi namin in the next game, kailangan maging motivation namin ‘yung game na 'yun. 'Pag once iniisip mo ‘yung loss, parang survival (mode) siya pero kailangan i-angat mo ‘yung sarili mo. Hindi puwedeng si (team captain) Rem (Palma) lang ‘yung kumakapit sa team, kailangan lahat kami iaangat namin ‘yung team namin para maipanalo bawat games namin."
