PBA: TNT dethrones Meralco, ends 3x3 leg title drought




MANILA, February 1 ------ TNT Triple Giga finally won a PBA 3x3 title after five legs in the Third Conference of Season 3. The Almond Vosotros-starred team defeated the Meralco Bolts, 21-18, to rule Leg 5 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Paranaque City. The former La Salle Green Archer fired seven points in the win as they finally overcame the Bolts whom they faced in the past championship rounds of the two previous legs.


The team of coach Mau Belen also dedicated the title to Samboy De Leon, who is out with a season-ending injury. “This is for you brother. Get well soon,” said Chester Saldua of De Leon, who was replaced by newcomer Xyrus Torres. En route to the win that earned them Php 100,000, they defeated Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the quarterfinals, 21-15, and their sister squad, the CAVITEX Braves in the semifinals, 21-16. Before Leg 5, TNT was not able to win any of the previous legs in the third conference.


Meanwhile, the Meralco Bolts, who have won three legs in this conference, defeated the Pioneer ElastoSeal Katibays in the quarters, and the MCFASolver Tech Centrale in the semis, 17-14, to bring home the Php 50,000 cash prize. Finally, the other sister team of the first and second placers also clinched a podium finish after Cavitex defeated MCFASolver in the Battle for Third, 21-13. The Braves defeated Terrafirma Dyip 3x3 in the q’finals, 21-15, while Tech Centrale ousted the San Miguel Beermen, 19-13.
