MANILA, February 11 ------ Palawan province recorded its heaviest 24-hour rainfall as the shear line continued to affect the area. Shear line is the zone where intense thunderstorms form from the convergence of the cool northeast monsoon or Amihan and the warm and moist easterlies. Puerto Princesa City received 352 millimeters of rain between 8 a.m. February 9 and 8 a.m. February 10, according to PAGASA data. This is almost 12 times the normal rainfall for February, which is the driest month in the city. It also topped the previous heaviest 24-hour precipitation record in Palawan of 317.6 mm observed on August 13, 1979 in Coron town.
Widespread flooding was reported in parts of Puerto Princesa City, Aborlan, and Narra, which prompted the Philippine Coast Guard to conduct rescue operations. Over the weekend, massive floods also occurred in parts of Oriental Mindoro, Bicol Region, and Eastern Visayas.
Based on PAGASA’s heavy rainfall outlook, heavy to intense rains in Palawan, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas will persist through midday Tuesday, while moderate to heavy rains will batter the eastern section of Luzon through Thursday noon. Apart from the shear line, the easterlies also bring scattered rains in Caraga, while light to occasionally moderate Amihan rains are experienced in Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and parts of Central Luzon and Calabarzon.
