Number of ASF-affected barangays in PH drops

MANILA, March 19 ------ The number of barangays with active cases of African swine fever (ASF) dropped further by the end of February, the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry reported. As of Feb. 28, red zones or those with active ASF cases dropped to 66 from 68 barangays logged last Feb. 14.

The affected barangays are reported in eight regions including Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Central, and Caraga. The majority of the 42 affected cities and municipalities are reported in Central Visayas, particularly in Bohol including Batuan, Bien Unido, Bilar, Catigbian, Dagohoy, Loon, Panglao, San Miguel, Tagbilaran City, Talibon, Trinidad, and Ubay.

Catanduanes’ capital town Virac recorded the highest number of red zones with eight barangays affected; while others logged less than five affected barangays. New cases in Batangas, which served as the first area for the government-controlled vaccination against ASF, were also reported, particularly in Ibaan, Lemery, and Lipa City.

To date, the DA is implementing stringent border checkpoints in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, alongside the government-controlled vaccination using AVAC live vaccines, and repopulation efforts to support affected hog farmers.
