February 6 ------ THE Philippines captured four gold medals in the Boxam Elite Tournament in Alicante, Spain. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Nesthy Petecio led Team Philippines by claiming one of the four gold medals in the tournament that also served as part of its build-up in the two Olympic qualifying tournaments this year. Rogen Ladon, Aira Villegas, and Hergie Bacyadan also claimed gold in the competition.
Petecio defeated Hsiao Wen Huang of Chinese Taipei to take the women’s featherweight (57kg) gold medal. Ladon captured the men’s flyweight (51kg) gold after winning over Istvan Szaka of Hungary, while Villegas downed Kyzaibay Nazym of Kazakhstan in the light flyweight (50kg) final. Bacaydan also took the women’s middleweight (75kg) diadem with the win over Yerzhan Gulsaya of Kazakhstan. Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines secretary general Marcus Jarwin Manalo was glad with the performance of the team. “This is not yet the Olympic qualifiers but at least we know we’re taking good steps into that direction,” said Manalo.
The Philippine team is gearing up for the Olympic qualification tournaments in Busto Arsizio, Italy from February 29 to March 12, and in Bangkok, Thailand from May 23 to June 3.
