NDRRMC: Kristine leaves several dead, around 2 million affected




MANILA, October 26 ------ Seven casualties were reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, hours after severe tropical storm Kristine made landfall in Luzon. According to the situational report, the NDRRMC listed four injured individuals and seven missing persons, which are still for validation.

 

Of the seven reported deaths, six are from the Bicol region and one from CALABARZON. The four injuries are all from Bicol region, which also logged five missing persons. Ilocos Region and CALABARZON each reported one missing individual. The NDRRMC said a total of 2,077,643 individuals or 431,738 families were affected by the severe tropical storm. Of this figure, over 43,000 families or more than 163,000 persons trooped to evacuation centers.

 

The bulk of the affected population or 1,669,507 individuals came from the Bicol region, which was first hit by the severe tropical storm. The next most badly-hit area was the Bangsamoro region with 351,913 individuals; followed by MIMAROPA with 24,748 affected persons. A total of 17 landslides were reported by the NDRRMC, 15 of which were in Bicol region. Over 100 cities and municipalities experienced power interruption, 25 of which were already restored based on the report. More than 1,000 houses were either partially or totally damaged by the storm in the regions of Ilocos, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas.

 

Meantime, nearly 6,000 passengers were stranded across seaports in CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol region, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, CARAGA, Bangsamoro and Cordillera Administrative Region. Most of the stranded passengers are in the Bicol region at 2,450; followed by Eastern Visayas with 2,027. The Philippine Coast Guard on Thursday reported 8,786 passengers, 2,725 rolling cargoes, 142 vessels and 65 motorbancas stranded across 126 ports in the country.

 

Two airports have been affected, one in MIMAROPA and one in Bicol region. 18 cities and municipalities in the Bicol region have been placed under a state of calamity due to the onslaught of the severe tropical storm. The NDRRMC monitored 149 flooded areas - 64 in the Bicol region, 30 in CALABARZON and 28 in MIMAROPA. Disaster officials say the government has distributed over P21 million worth of aid to nearly 5,000 families. The data does not yet reflect the Bicol region, where some areas are still submerged in flood waters.

 

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier said government aid will be sent to these areas soon as roads are passable.
