Mon Fernandez urges Big J to ‘fight like the fighter that he is’

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines, March 12 ------ On the occasion of Robert Jaworski's 78th birthday, Mon Fernandez urged his great friend and occasional rival to keep on fighting like the way he always did during their heydays when the two were the country's most loved and decorated players. Jaworski, popularly known as the Big J, has not been in seen public nor heard from as reports say he's been battling a rare physical ailment.

Mon wishes Big J good health

“I just felt that I had to wish him good health especially that we all know that he is not in the best of shape,” said Fernandez in a brief chat with SPIN.ph during his appearance in the EASL Final Four.

Fernandez said he hopes the post would go a long way in Jaworski's recovery, He noted that Jawo had always been known as a health freak, never abused his body and took care of himself and was the reason he played basketball when he was already 50 years old. “Hindi ako sanay na ganito ang physical condition niya because I know for a fact that I consider him as a player that took care of himself, his health the most,” said Fernandez. “I just wanted to give him some words of encouragement to fight like the fighter that he is and wish him good health for his 78th birthday. Matagal din naman kami nagkasama," Fernandez said.

Mon, Big J teammates for 10 years

The two began their partnership in 1973 as members of the national team, and later, as teammates for 10 years with Toyota until it disbanded in 1985. Fernandez and Jaworski were teammates in the Philippine team during the 1973 ABC Championship where they won the title. The two also captured nine championships with Toyota in the PBA.

After Toyota was disbanded, the two went separate ways with Jaworski going to Ginebra and, almost singlehandedly, made the team the most loved in the PBA. Until this day, long after Jawo retired, Barangay Ginebra still draws the biggest crowds when it plays.

Fernandez said the Jaworski family reached out to him and was thankful for his birthday message. “Received a message from Vice Mayor Dodot. I saw the comment of Ron Jaworski sa post ko. Let’s continue to pray for the family and for him especially,” said Fernandez.
