Metro Manila, November 10 ------ Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced a ₱0.2347 per kilowatt hour (kWh) increase in rates this month. This brings the overall rate for a typical household to ₱12.0545 per kWh in November—up from ₱11.8198 per kWh in October. "For residential customers consuming 200 kWh, the adjustment is equivalent to an increase of around ₱47 in their total electricity bill," the power distributor said.
The rate hike was due to the increase in transmission charge that went up to ₱0.1211 per kWh for residential customers. Meralco added that the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines' ancillary service charge for regulating reserves increased almost four times its prior rate. There were also increases in the generation charge and other charges. "The generation charge for November also went up by ₱0.0671 to ₱7.1938 per kWh from ₱7.1267 per kWh last month due to higher charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs)," Meralco said.
The firm explained that the ₱1.0933 per kWh increase in WESM charges was due to tight supply conditions in the Luzon grid, while the hike of ₱0.1093 per kWh in IPP charges was "mainly due to lower IPP dispatch and an increase in price of Malampaya natural gas." Other charges also registered a ₱0.0465 per kWh total increase.
Meralco said the collection for Feed-In Tariff Allowance (FIT-All), at the rate of ₱0.0364 per kWh, remain suspended as directed by the Energy Regulatory Commission. Its distribution charge, meanwhile, has not moved since the ₱0.0360 per kWh reduction for a typical household in August 2022.
