October 27 ------ The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) has ordered the Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) to pay back its customers as a penalty for the continued water service interruptions within its Putatan Water Treatment Plant (PWTP) supply zone.
Joel Dominguez, manager of the MWSS-Regulatory Office Operation Monitoring Department, said based on their assessment and computation, Maynilad owes its customers P9.264 million in penalty. There are 143,167 Maynilad customers within the Putatan Water Treatment Plant (PWTP) supply zone and Domiguez said this means that the company has to pay each of the affected customers with P65. The rebate is expected to be deducted in next month’s billing. He said the penalty was computed based on the cost of the mitigating measures proposed by Maynilad to prevent the recurrence of water service interruptions due to high algal count and high turbidity.
From May to July 2022, the MWSS-RO monitored prolonged and recurring water service interruptions and water quality issues in the southern part of the West Concession Area. Based on the investigation, Maynilad was found to have breached its service obligation of ensuring the availability of an uninterrupted 24-hour supply of water at seven pounds per square inch (psi) minimum pressure for more than 15 days to connected customers in parts of Las Piñas City, Muntinlupa City, Parañaque City, and Cavite Province (Bacoor City, Imus City, Cavite City, Noveleta, and Rosario).
