April 3 ------ JAPETH Aguilar and Mason Amos have been included in the Gilas Pilipinas pool to serve as alternates, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced.
Aguilar and Amos will now join the original 12-man pool where they will also be in the hunt for slots in July’s Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia. “We’re excited that Mason and Japeth agreed to be our alternates on Gilas,” said national coach Tim Cone in a statement.
Cone said injuries to players during the first window of the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers prompted him to increase the number of players in the Gilas pool. “The first window showed us that we were a little thin in our line-up after AJ Edu, June Mar (Fajardo), and Jamie (Malonzo) missed our game vs. Chinese Taipei due to injuries, and we were left with only nine players and only Japeth as a replacement to make 10. “So now, Japeth and Mason will practice and travel with the original 12 and be ready to step in if the need arises. If we lose one of our bigs, Japeth will step in. If any of the others, Mason will fill the hole. he added.
