March 31 ------ President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that 115 Filipino convicts in the United Arab Emirates had been granted royal pardons ahead of Eid'l Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. In a press release, Marcos thanked UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his country's ''compassionate act.''
''We recall how the UAE pardoned 143 Filipinos for last year’s Eid-Al-Adha and 220 on the occasion of their National Day,” Marcos said. “This gesture is a reflection of our countries’ special partnership, as embodied in the nearly one million Filipinos who have made the Emirates their home and in the warm personal friendship and mutual respect between myself as the leader of the Filipino people and Sheikh Mohamed as the leader of the Emiratis,” he added.
The Department of Foreign Affairs was informed by the UAE Embassy in Manila of the royal pardons on Friday. The UAE had also asked the Philippines for assistance in relaying the names of those pardoned.
Eid'l Fitr is expected to take place on March 31. “As the Philippines celebrates this momentous occasion, both nations reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, ensuring that such acts of kindness pave the way for continued cooperation and understanding in the years to come,” Marcos said
