LGUs advised to prepare for evacuation over volcanic activities of Mayon, Taal


June 9 ----- The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has ordered its officials in Bicol Region and Calabarzon to prepare contingency measures amid the increased in volcanic activities of Mayon Volcano in Albay and Taal Volcano in Batangas.


OCD spokesperson Asst. Secretary Raffy Alejandro IV said the contingency measures were discussed during a meeting with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and other government agencies after the Mayon’s alert level was raised to Level 3.


Alejandro said the OCD has already issued a memorandum directing its officials to coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices in concerned areas for heightened monitoring and close coordination. He said local OCD officials and disaster preparedness managers were also instructed to prepare the public on possible evacuation if the situation worsens. “Concerned regional offices and government agencies were already informed to review their preparedness measures and check all resources for possiboe deployment and distribution,” Alejandro said.


The official said local government units were also advised to strictly implement the off-limit rule inside the Permanent Danger Zones, especially for farmers and tourists. On Monday, June 5, Phivolcs hoisted Alert Level 2 over Mayon Volcano over increasing volcanic activity. On Thursday, June 8, it raised the alert level to 3, which is classified as increased tendency toewards a hazardous eruption.


In Batangas, some LGUs suspended classes due to thick smog caused by increased volcanic activity of Taal Volcano.
