MANILA, Philippines, September 12 ------ Marcio Lassiter overtakes a Philippine basketball shooting legend. Lassiter eclipsed Allan Caidic for the second most three-pointers made in PBA history as the San Miguel Beermen avenged their previous loss to the NLEX Road Warriors, 119-114, in the Governors’ Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Lassiter hit his 1,243rd career triple at the 6:50 mark of the fourth quarter to dislodge Caidic (1,242) from the No. 2 spot of the PBA’s all-time three-point list. The feat also pushed Lassiter closer to claiming the three-point king title, as he stands just eight shots behind league leader and another legend in Jimmy Alapag (1,250).
Lassiter finished with 17 points built on four three-point connections in San Miguel’s payback win against NLEX. “Just to be in this elite status is quite amazing, and I’m just truly grateful and thankful. Most important is to get the win. That’s what we needed to do tonight,” said the former Gilas sniper.
San Miguel outscored the Road Warriors, 33-22 in the fourth quarter to turn what was once a nine-point deficit to a second straight San Miguel victory. The win also evened their season series to 1-1 after the Road Warriors pulled off an overtime upset against the Beermen in Cagayan de Oro two weeks ago. CJ Perez led San Miguel with 24 points, while June Mar Fajardo added 17 markers and 9 rebounds as the Beermen improved to 4-2 in the Group B standings.
Perez, Fajardo, and Don Trollano delivered the crucial hits for the Beermen down the stretch to seal the win. “I just told them in the second half that we just have to have pride in playing our one-on-one defense, so that there won’t be a lot of over-helping,” said SMB head coach Jorge Gallent. Robert Bolick paced the Road Warriors with 24 points and 15 assists while import Myke Henry added 17 in the loss. NLEX lost its third straight game, sliding to 3-4 in the standings.
