Kanlaon continues to spew ash – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines, December 12 ------ Kanlaon Volcano continued to spew ash days after its eruption, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Phivolcs said there has been continuous degassing with occasional ash emissions. Two ash emission events were recorded since Tuesday, which lasted from 11 to 39 minutes long.

Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said they are still analyzing the ash from the eruption if it can be classified as a magmatic eruption. There were also 31 volcanic earthquakes recorded in the period. Sulfur dioxide flux was monitored at 4,121 tons per day that generated plumes of around 100 meters tall.

Kanlaon is still under Alert Level 3 or magmatic unrest, as Phivolcs recommended the evacuation of communities within the six-kilometer radius of the volcano. Phivolcs warned of even stronger explosive eruptions at Kanlaon, following an explosive eruption at the summit vent of the volcano at 3:03 p.m. on Monday. The event lasted three minutes and 55 seconds and produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to 4,000 meters above the vent. There has only been one documented magmatic eruption at Kanlaon Volcano in 1902.

Meanwhile, tourism related activities, parties and social gatherings are being prohibited within the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone of Kanlaon Volcano. In an advisory, the Department of Tourism suspended trekking, swimming, farm site visits and day tours in La Castellana, La Carlota City, Bago City and Murcia in Negros Occidental, as well as in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, which was affected by heavy ashfall. Fifteen tons of food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development had already reached the port of Bulado in Negros Occidental, the Philippine Ports Authority said yesterday. The food packs are intended to be given to residents who left their homes since last Monday due to Kanlaon’s eruption.
