Justin of SB19 reveals significance of visual storytelling in solo career

October 27 ------ Justin de Dios of the globally renowned P-Pop group SB19 delivered his solo track "Kaibigan" with a music video showcasing his adeptness at visual storytelling. Notably, Justin debuted as a solo artist earlier this year with the whimsical piece "Surreal," followed by a rendition of Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning." Subsequently, he released his original Filipino song, "Kaibigan," an evocative composition depicting the complexities of one-sided love. The track quickly garnered attention across platforms, with Justin attributing its success to the Filipinos' love for "hugot" songs — relatable and heartrending ballads. He also shared that the melodies, storyline, and music video likely contributed to the song's appeal.

Justin recounted the time spent preparing the song in the studio with production duo Radkidz. He revealed that the track initially didn't include a section where he candidly screams until the producers suggested it, which ultimately added emotional depth to the song. He also expressed how enjoyable it was to film the music video, revealing that the aesthetic scenes were shot in Baler, Aurora. Besides recording, he said it felt like a vacation. Discussing his solo artistry, Justin shared his desire to evoke listeners' imagination and incorporate his proficiency in visual storytelling through his music videos. His knack for visual arts is evident in his group's videos like "Hanggang sa Huli," "What?" and "WYAT," as well as in his debut single, "Surreal," which revolves around sharing visions beyond reality with another person. Justin also highlighted the pre-chorus of "Surreal," which he considers the most significant among his compositions. He noted that starting the pre-chorus with "and" was an intentional yet uncommon choice that naturally connected his verses.

Justin acknowledged that debuting with SB19 influenced his singing, but he transitioned from practicing dance tracks and ballads to exploring calmer sounds in his solo career. After experimenting with various genres, he believes this journey has helped him become a more versatile musician. When asked about his goals for his first year as a soloist, he modestly expressed a desire to create music and produce visuals for his songs. For Justin, music adds depth to life, and he can't imagine living without it. He explained, "Music is not just something you hear. It has instruments, visual arts, stories, and feelings. It adds life to life."
