August 27 ------ SAN Miguel shook off a lethargic start and took care of business against an import-less Blackwater side, 128-108 of the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Beermen struggled against the Bossing’s outside shooting in the first half and trailed, 63-56, at the break. But once they got into the groove, the Bossing hardly offered any resistance. Import Jordan Adams erupted for 50 points and sparked a huge third quarter run by the Beermen, where they outscored the opposition, 38-20, to finally seize control of the game, 94-83.
It was the second straight win for San Miguel, which forged a three-way tie on top of the Group B standings along with NLEX and Rain or Shine. “I just had to remind them that we weren’t playing San Miguel basketball. We were playing selfish basketball in the first half. We weren’t rotating the ball and were giving them easy shots especially in the paint,” said San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent of the Beermen’s first half struggles.
Adams was 6-of-10 from three-point range and had 11 rebounds and four assists for the Beermen, who also had five other players in double figures led by CJ Perez with 14 points eighth-time MVP June Mar Fajardo with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Blackwater played without import Ricky Ledo, who was given the pink slip following the team’s 112-93 loss to NLEX last Thursday, where he had his second straight lackluster performance. But the Bossing still managed to hold their own against the Beermen even while playing all-Filipino.
Big man Troy Rosario led Blackwater with 25 points, rookie Sedrick Barefield with 16 and the trio of James Kwekuteye, Jewel Ponferrada, and Christian David a combined 32 points as they kept the Bossing afloat in the first half. The Bossing enjoyed their biggest lead at 63-53 just before the halftime break. The moment San Miguel stepped on the gas starting the third quarter though, Blackwater began to unravel and suffered their third straight loss to place at the cellar of Group B.
