September 24 ------ Former IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas had to settle for a disqualification win in his comeback fight against Sukpraserd Ponpitak in the co-main event of Blow by Blow at Mandaluyong City College. The 32-year-old Ancajas showed flashes of his vintage form when he scored a knockdown in the opening stanza when he landed a well-timed counter right hook. The Thai, however, got up and finished the round.
Ponpitak made the following rounds look ugly. Unable to land a telling blow, the Thai resorted to pushes, throws, and takedowns that drew the ire of the crowd. He was warned by the referee but Ponpitak was repeated the fouls that got him a point deduction. Ancajas, on the other, boxed and utilized his jab while trying to land an uppercut. Whenever Ponpitak closed the distance, he would try to wrestle the Filipino again which ultimately got him disqualified in round 5.
It was a much-needed win for Ancajas, who is coming off a stoppage loss at the hands of Takuma Inoue last February. He improved his professional boxing record to 35-4-2 with 23 knockouts.
