Japan to support PH Navy for regional peace, stability




MANILA, February 26 ------ The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is committed to furthering its defense cooperation with the Philippine Navy (PN) as part of its efforts to preserve peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific Region. PN spokesperson Capt. John Percie Alcos, in a statement, said Japan Defense Minister Gen Nakatani made this commitment following his Feb. 24 visit to the Asagiri-class destroyer JS Hamagiri (DD-155) which was docked at the South Harbor, Manila. 

  

The Japanese ship is in the Philippines for a courtesy call along with Murasame-class destroyer JS Ariake. Both vessels arrived in the country Monday. "(Japanese Defense Minister Nakatani) emphasized that the activities of the JMSDF, which protect national security and global stability, are crucial for strengthening ties and fostering mutual trust with countries like the Philippines," Alcos said. 

  

During the event, Nakatani was accompanied by Defense Senior Undersecretary Ireneo Espino and PN chief Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta. Nakatani also expressed hope that the various JMSDF exchange programs with the PN would further strengthen its defense cooperation with the Philippines. Alcos said Japan views the Philippines as a "strategic partner" that shares fundamental values with it. 

  

Meanwhile, in the same statement, Ezpeleta thanked Tokyo's defense chief and stressed that the "continued support and collaboration between the JMSDF and the PN in achieving maritime security and stability in the region." He added that engagement with the JMSDF is an important step in deepening the country’s strategic partnership with Japan.
