CHICAGO, December 31 ------ This month certainly wasn't the most wonderful time of the year for the TNT Tropang Giga. Already playing this without key players, import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has been ruled out of the rest of the Commissioner's Cup with a neck injury sustained following a bad fall during an EASL game versus the Taipei Braves last week in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
After an 86-78 loss to Ginebra on Christmas Day, the Tropang Giga's record dipped to 4-5, sinking them to seventh place in the overall standings. Amid all the grim and lack of merry-making, a bit of good news arrived two days after Christmas. A person close to Mikey Williams told SPIN.ph that the two-time Finals MVP is warming up to the idea of returning to the PBA. Per the source, Williams' camp would like to speak directly and only to Chot Reyes, who is set to return to his head-coaching job next conference. Reyes, who is currently TNT's senior consultant, could not be reached for comment. But sources within the MVP Group told SPIN.ph that the Tropa would "entertain the opportunity to open the communication lines with Williams."
TNT awaits Mikey move
Asked if this could eventually lead to a reunion between the two sides, the source, who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of TNT added, "I guess they'll cross that bridge when they get there." After invoking a renegotiation clause in his contract, Williams left for the US last April. When two sides couldn't come to terms, Williams' contract with TNT was officially terminated last month. There's so many hurdles yet to overcome to hammer down a new agreement and achieve labor peace. But today's development is a necessary first step.
