November 18 ------ PETER Groseclose made history for the Philippines by capturing a bronze in the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior World Cup 2, the first time the country won a medal in the competition. The 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games campaigner placed third in the short track speed skating 500m, winning a medal among 47 countries, according to the Philippine Skating Union (PSU).
Koo Minseung of Korea bagged the gold, while Victor Chartrand of Canada took the silver medal. The 17-year-old Filipino speed skater, born in Tarzana, California, improved from his sixth place finish in the same event last year in the Netherlands. Earlier this year, Groseclose was in contention for a medal in the 500m of the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, Korea but had a collision with a Chinese speed skater, leading to the Fil-Am being penalized and failing to register a time.
Groseclose has been training under the auspices of the Potomac Speedskating Club in Virginia and coached by Jimmy Jang and Simon Cho. Meanwhile, the PSU also announced that Philippine-based Hans Buemio earned a slot in the ISU Junior World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2025 in Calgary, Canada.
