Gilas Youth breezes past Indonesia even without Andy Gemao

September 3 ------ GILAS Pilipinas Youth opened its FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2024 campaign by overwhelming Indonesia, 75-48, on Monday in Amman, Jordan as the team deals with the last-minute scratch of Andy Gemao. Batang Gilas put their Southeast Asia neighbors away in the second quarter where they outscored Indonesia, 23-2, even without Gemao.

Gemao, the team's top scorer during the SEABA qualifiers last July, was ruled out on the eve of the tournament after sustaining a third metacarpal bone fracture during a tune-up game against Iran. Cabs Cabonilas took the scoring cudgels for Gilas Youth by finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds in the game where the Philippines took a 36-16 lead after holding a slim 15-14 gap at the end of the first.

Drei Lorenzo had 12 points, on 4-of-5 from threes, and four rebounds, while Earl Medina added 11 points, two rebounds, and three assists for Batang Gilas. Mark Esperanza also had a solid showing with eight points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
