Gilas Youth bows to New Zealand in FIBA U18 Asia Cup




September 5 ------ GILAS Pilipinas Youth bowed to New Zealand, 75-58, at the close of the group stage of the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2024 in Amman, Jordan. Batang Gilas lost despite the 30-point effort of John Earl Medina as they fall to 1-2 win-loss card in Group D.

 

Barring any stunning blowout win by Indonesia over Jordan in the final game of the group, the Philippines will play for a quarterfinal berth in a playoff match against either Japan or Qatar, teams in Group C. Carter Hopoi had 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Tamatoa Isaac had 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assists for New Zealand, which held a 43-26 halftime lead. Mark Esperanza added 14 points for the Philippines, whose only win came against Indonesia in its opening game, 75-48.
