Gilas Women end Jones Cup campaign with loss to Chinese Taipei-A

July 11 ------ GILAS Pilipinas Women wrapped up its 2024 William Jones Cup campaign with an 82-66 loss to Chinese Taipei-A in New Taipei City. The nationals fell behind early, trailing 26-10 at the end of the first quarter and never recovered from that initial onslaught by the host country. With the loss, the Philippines finished fourth among six teams in the competition with a 2-3 win-loss slate.

Japan Universiade won the championship via a 5-0 sweep of the tournament, with Chinese Taipei-A placing second with a 4-1 win-loss record, and Chinese Taipei-B at third with a 2-3 slate. Naomi Panganiban had 19 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Afril Bernardino had 12 points and six rebounds for Gilas Women. Stephanie Berberabe contributed 12 points, as Jack Animam had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Philippines began the Jones Cup with a 73-60 loss to Chinese Taipei-B after struggling from the three-point arc, but Gilas recovered and defeated Malaysia Harimau, 74-63. Gilas Women had its best chance of at least contending for the championship slip away when it fell short in its comeback bid against Japan, 85-83, the closest loss by the eventual champion in the tournament. The Philippines was able to pick up another win in beating Thailand, 68-58, but was unable to finish the tournament with another victory when it was outclassed by Chinese Taipei-A.
