December 19 ------ One of the OG or original members of the iconic '90s group Smokey Mountain and hailed as one of '90s OPM pop princess Geneva Cruz is back to making music and this time it’s for Christmas! During a media huddle, Cruz sampled and shared the story behind her new holiday single "When Christmas Comes." “Last year was my first attempt at creating a Christmas song, so I reached out to my good friend Dan Gil, who is one of Maestro Ryan Cayabyab’s top students who also played for Smokey Mountain’s major concert in Araneta Coliseum in December of 1990. But we couldn’t create. Creation is all about inspiration and timing. I guess the timing wasn’t right then,” she said.
Cruz added that love was the inspiration behind her holiday track -- just like some of her songs back in the '90s. If you’ve been a fan of her, especially in her pop solo haydays, Cruz recorded songs like "Love Can Wait," "To Manila," and "Love is Here." She wrote these songs when she was 15 years old for her first solo album.
And just like her old songs, "When Christmas Comes" has an old-school vibe. “I’m pretty old school. I’ve had wonderful memories of Christmas. My parents, especially my late mom, made the holidays special for my sisters and me.” Her best friend and co-member in Smokey Mountain, Jeffrey Hidalgo, is the director of the music video of "When Christmas Comes."
