February 7 ------ CIGNAL bucked a rare slow start to beat Petro Gazz, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20, and remain undefeated in its opening two games of the 2024 PNVF Champions League at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. An in-form Vanie Gandler manned the HD Spikers' unassailable offense alongside Riri Meneses with 18 points apiece to turn a nine-point opening set loss around in a commanding reverse sweep.
Meneses and ex-Premier Volleyball League (PVL) MVP Ces Molina dished out a combined 10 points in the closing set as Cignal dealt a new-look Petro Gazz side its first loss in two games. As was the case in the Angels' opening assignment versus Army, Fil-American standout Brooke Van Sickle proved to be a scoring gem yet again with 21 points on 19 attacks, one black, and one ace. Eight of her game-high output came in the fourth set after carrying the scoring load in a bid to force a fifth-set extension — all of which went for naught as Cignal's well-versed offense proved unassailable in the end.
The HD Spikers remain the lone unbeaten PVL side in the preseason tilt as both Chery Tiggo and Petro Gazz absorbed early elimination round defeats.
