Filipinas light up newly-built MoA pitch with competitive draw

February 26 ------ FILIPINAS Blue drew with Filipinas White, 1-1, in their intra-squad match to wrap up their training camp at the Mall of Asia Football Field. The Blue squad mainly composed of younger players went toe-to-toe with the White team of veterans, majority of which were part of the historic FIFA Women’s World Cup team.

Alex Carpio, the 22-year-old who recently graduated from University of San Francisco who has been with the national team since last year, scored the first goal for the Blue team. Meryll Serrano tied the match-up for White to eventually settle the final count and finish off the eight-day training camp held in Manila.

The intra-squad match and the training camp are part of the team’s build-up for this year’s competitions that includes the AFF Women’s Championship and the Southeast Asian Games. “This was an opportunity for us to prepare for the year,” said Filipinas coach Mark Torcaso. “It’s going to be a busy year. There are new faces. It’s a good opportunity to have a match like this because we got to see all our players compete in a really good exhibition game in a brand-new facility as well. For us, it was really about building and creating a nice, big pool of players, and it’s building around another World Cup which has Asian Cup qualifiers, AFF, SEA Games in between,” said Torcaso.

Filipinas mainstays Sarina Bolden and Quinley Quezada didn’t play in the intra-squad match due to minor injuries sustained during the camp.
