Entrepreneurship has become a dream for many Filipinos, with a staggering four out of five expressing a desire to become entrepreneurs, according to a recent survey by our friends from OCTA Research. The appeal of entrepreneurship lies in the freedom it offers individuals to shape their own success, unbound by the limitations of a traditional job. While luck can play a role, the true differentiator between those who succeed and those who quit is mindset.
A positive and optimistic mindset is crucial for aspiring entrepreneurs. Successful business owners I have encountered are driven by passion and possess an unwavering belief in their abilities. It is how they navigate challenges, failures and setbacks, continuously finding the strength to pick themselves up and fight another day. Surrounding oneself with like-minded, positive individuals can further bolster this mindset, providing invaluable support during difficult times.
At our free entrepreneurship roadshow, 3M on Wheels, it is not uncommon to hear stories of failed businesses from those we mentor. However, what sets these aspiring entrepreneurs apart is their willingness to learn and their openness to guidance. We equip them with essential skills and knowledge, particularly in areas like financial literacy and cash flow management. Mentorship plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing guidance, encouragement and the right advice at the right time.
Another characteristic of a successful entrepreneur is a keen eye for opportunity. In today’s digital age, social media has emerged as a powerful platform. It presents opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to thrive, especially those who have a gift for branding and product positioning. Ride-hailing platforms for motorcycle riders have allowed individuals to become their own bosses, while social media marketing provides a level playing field for both established and budding entrepreneurs. The concept of nanopreneurs – one-person operations – is gaining traction, with market demand becoming the ultimate measure of success.
Financial literacy is another essential component for aspiring entrepreneurs. Cash flow management is crucial for the success of any business venture. Entrepreneurs must learn to separate business finances from personal expenses and practice effective money management. Equally important is identifying one’s strengths and excelling in them. Standing out in a crowded market requires individuals to differentiate themselves, their products or their brands. This uniqueness often becomes a key selling point and can be instrumental in gaining a competitive edge.
Entrepreneurs often wonder whether competing solely on price is a viable strategy. Offering value does not mean compromising on quality. Success can be achieved by providing products or services that match the quality of established brands but at a more affordable price. I myself have seen this happen when RFM’s Pop Cola surpassed a global market leader in the soft drinks business.
However, it is essential to assess whether lower prices align with profitability. Sometimes, it is unnecessary to lower prices if there is no clear advantage to it; as might be the case if you have a restaurant in a prime location with a guaranteed market. Striking the right balance between affordability and profitability is key.
Franchising can also be an excellent first step for aspiring entrepreneurs. Contrary to popular belief, affordable franchise opportunities do exist, even for beginners. Franchising offers built-in mentorship, providing guidance and support from experienced professionals. It serves as a valuable learning avenue and an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in running a business.
Among MSMEs, we see a lot of home-based food business and small-scale manufacturing of things like soaps and fashion accessories. These all need to go to market. This makes reselling another viable option for entrepreneurs, particularly for those who already have an existing social and logistical network, however humble. With the advent of social media, resellers can leverage these platforms to showcase and sell products.
The rise of micro-influencers and content creators has also presented opportunities for micro-entrepreneurs to promote their products effectively and reach a wider audience. This trend creates a level playing field, democratizing opportunities and making the economy more inclusive.
Looking ahead, the tourism sector holds significant potential for entrepreneurs. As revenge travel gains momentum, there will be opportunities for businesses in this sector. Highlighting the uniqueness of Filipino cuisine and promoting authentic experiences can differentiate local offerings in the global market. Tour guides, accommodation providers and culinary entrepreneurs can tap into the wealth of resources the Philippines has to offer and cater to the growing demand for authentic experiences.
The ongoing wave of digitalization opens doors for individuals skilled in emerging technologies and e-commerce. The shift disrupts established practices, providing ample room for innovation and new business models. However, aspiring entrepreneurs must be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. It is crucial to combine passion with market demand, ensuring that skills and expertise align with industry needs.
Microenterprises play a vital role in the overall business ecosystem. They provide opportunities for growth, creating more spending power and contributing to economic prosperity. Building a robust support system for micro-entrepreneurs is crucial for uplifting those at the bottom of the pyramid. By empowering individuals with knowledge, access to education and inclusive mentoring, we can enhance their chances of success.
Becoming an entrepreneur is a challenging journey that requires dedication, resilience and continuous learning. It is a path that is not for the faint of heart. However, with the right mindset, skills and opportunities, anyone can embark on this exciting adventure. The key is to believe in oneself, identify market demand and seize the right opportunities. The road may not always be easy, but the rewards of entrepreneurship can be truly fulfilling.
