Enrile, Duterte appointees make it to Marcos Cabinet

Metro Manila, June 17 ------ President-elect Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has named three more appointees to his Cabinet, including former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and two appointees of his predecessor, President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Marcos camp on announced that 98-year-old Enrile will serve as the incoming president's legal counsel. Enrile served as the justice secretary and defense minister during the administration of Marcos' father, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos. He was widely known as one of the architects of martial law, but later helped topple Marcos in the 1986 people power revolt that swept President Corazon "Cory" Aquino to power. After a fallout with Aquino, Enrile was elected to the Senate until he retired from politics in 2016. Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra will be the new Solicitor General under the Marcos administration, succeeding outgoing SolGen Jose Calida.

Meanwhile, former Armed Forces chief Jose Faustino Jr. will temporarily serve as undersecretary and officer-in-charge of the Department of National Defense. He is set to assume the top defense post on Nov. 13 — one year after his mandatory retirement from the military in compliance with the law. According to incoming Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, Faustino and incoming National Security Adviser Clarita Carlos met with Marcos.
