July 26 ------ FATIGUE seemed to have caught up to Alex Eala, as she suffered early exits in the Polish Open after returning to action on the heels of winning two titles in Spain over the weekend. Eala, 19, suffered back-to-back losses in the WTA 125 tiff on Tuesday and Wednesday despite riding the high of her twin championship at the W100 Vitoria-Gasteiz just days prior.
There was a lot of optimism for the Filipino tennis star entering the Polish Open after she recorded career-best rankings in both singles and doubles at the beginning of the week. In singles, she leapt 12 places to world No. 143, while she also moved 37 places forward to No. 208 in doubles.
Unfortunately, in singles on Tuesday, Eala was stunned by Isabella Shinikova in the Round of 32, 2-6, 4-6, even as the Filipina was seeded fourth. Then in doubles the day after, she and partner Darja Semenistaja could not upend 2-seed pair Martyna Kubka and Weronika Falkowska in the quarterfinal, 4-6, 5-7.
