DOH shares tips to prevent heat-related illnesses

March 10 ------ As the country enters the dry season, the Department of Health has shared essential tips to help the public stay safe from heat-related illnesses. Speaking at a news forum in Quezon City, DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo stressed the importance of proper ventilation when indoors.

He also highlighted the need for hydration, advising people to drink at least seven to eight glasses of water daily to prevent heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. “Magbaon ng reusable water jug,” Domingo recommended. The health official also emphasized the importance of taking regular breaks or "heat breaks" to prevent overheating.

If someone shows signs of a heat-related illness, Domingo advised moving them to a cool, shaded area. He also suggested applying a cold compress to the neck, groin, and armpits and loosening tight clothing to help lower body temperature. For those engaging in outdoor activities or exercise, he recommended scheduling them before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to avoid peak temperatures.
