February 12 ------ The price of most flowers in Dangwa almost doubled days before Valentine's Day. Local and imported roses and tulips are now up for P80 to P100 per piece from their previous price of around P50 last week. Stargazer is now ranging from P180 to P200, with a P50 hike.
In one of the flower shops, the carnation bouquet was the bestseller due its lower price than the classic roses. A bouquet with 10 pieces of carnation was sold for P800. For those who prefer dried flowers, small roses can be bought for P35 each or three pieces for P100. Flower shop owner Jimuel said the higher demand from customers and higher costs from their suppliers affected the prices of some flowers. "Sa price ng China rose dating P900 to P1000, pero as of now P1600 na pwede pa siyang mag-increase up to P2000," Jimuel said.
George, a flower shop owner in Laguna, personally visits Dangwa every Valentine's Day to acquire supplies for his business. "Dito na kami kumukuha sa Dangwa kasi mura dito, bagsakan pati ng mga bulaklak," George said. Meanwhile, Naomi visited Dangwa days before Valentine's to reserve orders for her upcoming flower business. "As for the prices, tumaas siya, usually 'yung carnations P200, natatawaran ko pa ng P180, pero ngayong fixed na 'yung P230-P250. Kailangan mas agahan kasi pagdating ng 14 sobrang do-doble na siya," she said.
Other stores offer online transactions for flower orders and reservations to help busy customers prepare their presents for Valentine's Day. Flower shop owners expect a heavy crowd of patrons on Wednesday until Valentine’s Day on Friday.
