February 28 ------ CREAMLINE began its Premier Volleyball League (PVL) title defense with a hard-earned four-set victory over Farm Fresh — making it 16 wins in succession since their 15-game, title-winning sweep of the 2023 All-Filipino Conference last December. But for Cool Smashers head coach Sherwin Meneses and ace spiker Tots Carlos, their first win of the new season only marks the beginning of a long conference ahead — not 16 in a row and nothing more.
“Dito [sa new season], 0-0 na. 0-0 ang labanan, so talagang one point at a time kami ngayon. ‘Di kami 14-0, 15-0. 1-0 ngayon, kanina 0-0 pa. Du’n kami naka-focus. “Kailangan naming mapagod para ma-defend yung title this conference. ‘Di naman easy wins ‘yung mangyayari kasi talagang nagpalakas ‘yung mga ibang teams,” said Meneses on the seven-time champs’ bid for title No. 8. “I’m the type kasi na kapag tapos na, tapos na,’” Carlos said. “Yun lang naman mindset ko kasi paulit ulit-lang yung volleyball — serve, dig, set, spike"‘Yung competition this season, for sure mas competitive at mas challenging [kaya] we’re just really focused kung ano yung nasa harap namin and kung ano pa mangyayari in the future kasi it’s history na.” he added.
The three-time PVL MVP, who fired a game-high 19 markers in Creamline’s season-opening win, heaped praise on the squad’s depth, citing how each Cool Smasher can perform at a high level when the call of duty comes. “Honestly, natutuwa ako na lahat kami may role sa team. We’re really happy na kahit anong position, may sasalo sa amin and we can play our best. Happy ako kasi may katulong kami and everyone deserves to play," said Carlos. “Kung pwede lang lahat kami maglaro sa loob ng court, matutuwa [pa] kami na pwede kami maglaro [nang sabay-sabay]."
